There is going to be plenty of work for SAP BI/BW work in the future. SAP has a huge amount of market share in BI/BW. SAP can be a rather complex ecosystem of products, and so people with skills in this area are always going to be in demand. My caution would be there is significant disruption in the BI/BW space recently. There are many innovations happening from Netezza, Teradata, Greenplum, Vertica, Tableau, etc. There are literally too many to list. This is all being driven by:
- Data is growing by leaps and bounds.
- Companies are competing more and more using Analytics.
- Analytics companies are innovating to make getting answers easier.
- Schools are providing more programs around Data

SAP BW is not top of the technology. It’s much more business oriented, and is designed to build stuff without much programming. So if you dream about latest frameworks, algorithms, big data etc., then SAP BW is not for you. If, however, you are interested to understand how the business works and how you can optimize it, SAP BW is pretty interesting and challenging..
Knowledge of basic data warehousing is one of the prerequisites for BI/BW training. A programming background will be helpful if your goal is to be a BW developer; but being a developer and just having only technical knowledge will not be enough to have a good career in SAP.
Yes, you must have some coding knowledge in SAP BI/BW .ofcourse SAP bw has coding #ABAP at transformations level here we r using routines and at data source enhancement here we use BADI r USEREXITS contains little knowledge on ABAP

- SAP HANA and SAP BI/BW are Technical as well as Analytical tool to manage the Business data. SAP HANA has 3 parts: SAP HANA Administration, HANA Modelling and HANA with ABAP which is more programming-related. It's a more technical career path, and may be more widely used than BW.
- A BW career on the other side may be less technical, but you will need more analytic skills and you will be closer to the business.
- If you have to choose HANA Modelling or BI ...sure it has to be HANA Modelling ..Since it is being marketed and pushed by SAP very aggressively.
- So If you are already working in SAP BI/BW then you must upgrade yourself with SAP HANA Modelling to make attractive your Profile.
Is SAP BI/BW a good option for career growth? Is there demand for this now in the industry?

Competition is becoming heated. Data Warehouse, Visualization, ETL Tools, all have serious innovations happening. Companies like SAP are going to be around for a long time, however they are going to have a harder time keeping all of the pie. There are many advantages to using a non-SAP solution. Many are cheaper, not as complex, and easier to digest. You can start on solutions like Pentaho or Talend very small, and they can grow with you. Some companies like MicroStrategy have a very easy to understand product set.
One of our points is, that to learn SAP, and understand it very well, may consume your entire career. If I personally had to choose being an expert at SAP Business Objects and BW vs. riding the wave and understanding all the other cool innovations out there, I would take the wave.
BI/BW in general is a great career right now.
- If you make it SAP specific, it is still great, but I think that is limiting yourself more than you should. You have to ask yourself what it is you like to do. Do you like to play with databases, build visualizations, solve analytics problems? Focus on what you like. If you like BI/BW in general, than you should try to learn Databases, ETL tools, Statistics, Visualizations, Data Management and more. A generalist in todays explosion of data, one that can play on a team, is much more valuable than a specialist in my opinion.
- Business Intelligence & Analytics are playing a very important role in industry. Every industry generates huge amount of data everyday and they need tools to integrate all the sources, clean & maintain the data, make the data meaningful and BI tools does that for them.
- Having said that you have to be upskilled with the latest tools all the time. The tools in the BI industry are very dynamic and in every 2 years there is something new which is leading the market.
- Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform are the new cloud data storage destinations. They can process the data very fast and the charges are ‘Pay as you Use’.
- If we talk specifically about SAP, SAP Hana S4 & Business Objects on cloud are the hot skills at the moment. If you are a Hana certified with BW, BODS & BO knowledge you are at the top of the game. The latest version of BO gives direct connectivity to BigQuery and the major benefit of BO is the semantic layer (IDT/IDT) where most of the tools lose the edge.
- To summarise SAP BI/BW are very competent tools in the BI Industry and it will only grow in the future. To make a successful career in it, stay up to date with the latest tools & technologies and enhance your relevant skills as per the market demand.
The scope of SAP BW in the Future?
BW is the information backbone engine for SAP and the mySAP landscape. Traditional R/3 reporting does a good job of generating tactical (operational reports). But in the past few years SAP has growingly introduced the business information warehouse as the defacto reporting framework for the mySAP suite of solutions. Some reasons for introducing SAP BW:
- An information warehouse that enables analytical reporting.
- In a typical SAP user community more than 70% of the users would be "read-only" or reporting users. It is unnecessary to provide SAP transaction system reporting to the 70%.
- Ability to create reports on the fly providing much more flexibility to information insight.
BW is clearly the fastest growing SAP technology in terms of user adoption. In the last few years alone, over 3000 installations of BW have been reported. SAP has thrown in a very creative licensing strategy that provides attractive incentives to migrate to mySAP BW.
The key components of BW that have gained momentum:
- Strategic & tactical information analytics
- Portal integration for extended and easier information consumption
- Pre-delivered best business practices (Business content) for expedited implementations.
- BW-BPS for planning and feedback into SAP transaction system
SAP BW is the information engine for the new dimension suite of products like APO (demand planning), CRM (campaigns, trade and promotion management, customer churn analysis) and SRM (vendor scorecarding).
