      • Administrative commands – The cryptoadm command provides a list subcommand to list the available providers and their capabilities. Ordinary users can run the cryptoadm list and the cryptoadm --help commands.
All other cryptoadm subcommands require you to assume a role that includes the Crypto Management rights profile, or to become superuser. Subcommands such as disable, install, and uninstall are available for administering the framework. For more information, see the cryptoadm(1M) man page. The svcadm command is used to manage the kcfd daemon, and to refresh cryptographic policy in the kernel. For more information, see the svcadm(1M) man page.
    • User-level commands – The digest and mac commands provide file integrity services. The encrypt and decrypt commands protect files from eavesdropping. To use these commands, see Protecting Files With the Oracle Solaris Cryptographic Framework (Task Map).
    • Binary signatures for third-party providers – The elfsign command enables third parties to sign binaries for use within the framework. Binaries that can be added to the framework are PKCS #11 libraries, kernel algorithm modules, and hardware device drivers. To use the elfsign command, see Appendix F, Packaging and Signing Cryptographic Providers, in Oracle Solaris Security for Developers Guide.
    • To reboot the system to the state that is defined by the initdefault entry in the /etc/inittab file, type the following command: # init 6.
    • To reboot the system to a multiuser state, type the following command: # init 2.

Oracle Solaris 11.4 contains support for the C11 programming language standard: "ISO/IEC 9899:2011 Information technology - Programming languages - C". The C11 standard is a compatible revision of the C99 standard. Historically, the C programming language standard has been part of the Single UNIX Specification.
Our courseware is designed to give a hands-on approach to the students in Oracle Solaris. The course is made up of theoretical classes that teach the basics of each module followed by high-intensity practical sessions reflecting the current challenges and needs of the industry that will demand the students’ time and commitment.
Among the many advantages the Solaris operating environment provides are portability, scalability, interoperability, and compatibility.
That made it popular with schools, governments, enterprises, and other large organizations, which used Solaris as a platform to develop their own proprietary software - software which still exists today. In short, Solaris is used to run legacy applications built for Solaris.

What are the Advantages of Oracle Solaris?

    • Delivers near-linear performance gains: 92 percent for database applications, and 88 percent for Java platform applications.
    • Speeds up Web workload processing by 47 percent on SPARC platforms with four processors over Oracle Solaris 9, and more than 80 percent over Oracle Solaris 8.
    • Increases Web workloads on x86 architecture systems, delivering up to 43 percent improvement over Oracle Solaris 9 with two processors.
    • Increases Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Data Encryption Standard (DES) performance by 77 percent; performance for 3DES increases by 130 percent over Oracle Solaris 9.
    • Improves performance up to 38 percent for Oracle Solaris 10 over Linux on dual-processor Sun Fire systems from Oracle.
    • Outperforms commercial distributions of Linux on x64 systems.
    • Sets performance and price/performance world records on multiple platforms.

    Proprietary software and open software

    • Solaris Operating System itself is still proprietary software, meaning that it’s impossible to access freely to its source code, so there’s no way for third parties to modify its code. In 2005 the company Sun announced that Solaris’ source code was going to be published with a CDDL (Common Development and Distribution License), making it possible to access the code in real time thanks to the open software project called OpenSolaris.
    • Therefore, OpenSolaris is an open software created from the proprietary version of Solaris, as well as a community of users from the OpenSolaris technologies.

A quite proficient architecture for symmetric multiprocessing

    • The internal structure of Solaris is similar to the one of a building of a city, from its core which keeps the whole façade standing, to the external part we see with which we can interact. On the one hand, we have theKernel, which is the root of the operating system, this is the fundamental software of Solaris.
    • On the other hand, the exterior part we’ve talked about would correspond to the Shell, an interpreter of orders that provides us with a user interface so we can have access to the operating system.
    • Keeping these two explanations in mind, Solaris uses a common code base for the architecture supported by SPARK y x86.This architecture can be run on a great number of devices, rightfully earning its fame for being quite proficient for symmetric multiprocessing (SMP). (Solaris 10 version has been designed having in mind AMD64, allowing more virtual and physical memory than before.)
    • Another interesting fact worth mentioning is that Solaris 2.5.1 was the only version that could support the Power PC platform (PC architecture of the type RISC)

Even Oracle Wants Solaris-paving way for Oracle Solaris

But now that Solaris will receive the marketing support that it deserves, information technology staff should be taking a close look at the operating system for the following reasons.

    Superior virtualization:

    • In the Linux world, virtualization is performed by multiple parties. One organization or company does the hypervisor (Xen, VMware, Citrix, Parallels), the virtual layer on top of the hardware. Another organization (the Linux community) adapts the operating system to better support virtualization. What Solaris offers IT is a top-to-bottom engineered approach to virtualization where the hardware, the hypervisor, the OS and the ZFS file system are all designed to deliver optimal performance and manageability.
    • Solaris Containers are a lightweight but powerful virtualization option with very low processing overhead (2% vs. about 20% for a hypervisor).
    • Linux will get there but at a slower pace as the multiple parties involved negotiate with each other. Microsoft also offers a unified virtualization stack but it remains to be seen if Windows can ever achieve as wide adoption in the server space.

    Scalability for Large Scale Multiprocessing:

    • Benchmarks shows that Linux stops providing benefits at four processors. You can add more, but performance won't get much better.
    • Solaris has been engineered to support massive multiprocessing. If you need to scale a single box, you can add dozens of processors, and Solaris boosts performance accordingly. Solaris also has the most scalable networking support of any operating system on the market.

    Reliability:

    • Linux has long been successful in data centers because it is less error prone than Windows, which frequently requires machines to be rebooted.
    • Solaris takes reliability to a new level. A feature called predictive self-healing allows failed hardware components to be swapped out without rebooting.

    Security:

    • The security in Solaris benefits from the same engineering quality as the rest of the operating system. Sun's security DNA comes from its experience supporting financial services computing and e-commerce.
    • Solaris was designed for secure networking and provides many security features, including role-based access control, a firewall and secure out-of-the-box settings.

    Administration:

    • Solaris has administration functions that allow mass changes to be made to many instances of an operating system at once and features that allow one master machine to be replicated to many other machines running a copy of the operating system.
    • The administration capabilities have been expanded to cover the challenges of running a large number of virtual machines.

    Flexible Deployment:

    • Solaris is offered both as a fully supported commercial product and as OpenSolaris, a leading-edge open source version where the latest features are tested. Solaris 10 can run Solaris 8 and 9 apps in containers. Further, Solaris runs on a huge range of hardware from x86 Intel platforms to high-end RISC servers.
    • Solaris can run on any hardware platform, not just on Sun hardware.
