Embedded System you don't have choice of deciding the role of each pin rather it would be as per guidelines provided by microcontroller datasheet. Each pin can have multiple roles but you cannot completely change the behaviour of those. Here you have dedicated memory available for programming your application. If you can't fit your application then you need to optimise it. Here in embedded systems generally programming language used is C. Also C++ . C is used at large scale as it is very close to the hardware ( you can control the hardware). In this you decide how each gate of silicon works or behaves. You can develop each module separately and combine them later to achieve the functionality. Also you can decide which pins of the chip can be input, output, ADC, SPI everything you can decide. How the system should react to the changes on pin you can configure it.
What are the prerequisites for learning Embedded Systems?
- Excellent understanding of Digital Electronics.
- Good to intermediate level of understanding of Basics of Analog Electronics.
- Good C Programming skills.
- Understanding of at least one Micro-controller or Micro-processor.
- More importantly, your attitude and openness to work with Open Hardware Boards connected to your Laptop / PC.
Is it okay to learn embedded C without having any knowledge of microcontrollers?
- Yes. Really there is only 'C', though there are cusomized compilers for microcontrollers that implement only a 'C' subset along with the appropriate assembly language.
- Learning 'C' will teach you much of what you need to know, and that may be easier on a general-purpose computer.
