PRojects IN Controlled Environments, and it is owned by AXELOS, a joint venture between the UK government and Capita Plc.

PRINCE was derived from PROMPT (Project Resource Organization Management Planning Techniques), which was a methodology developed by Simpact System Ltd in 1975. In 1979, the CCTA (Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency) started using it in all government IT projects.
