• OBIEE works on the basis of what might be called “just-in-time ETL”. A user query is parsed into subqueries containing native, optimized SQL, and these subqueries are then dispatched to the corresponding databases to retrieve the data needed to satisfy the query. • Whenever the BI Server process is started it reads the contents of a repository that defines the behaviour and functionality that is to be performed by the BI Server. User names and passwords can be stored in the repository, providing the BI Server with immediate access to the data needed for authentication. With LDAP authentication the user name and password are forwarded by the BI Server to an LDAP server to be authenticated. In addition to its role in authentication, an LDAP server can pass user information, such as a display name or a group membership, back to the BI Server to be used in customizing the user’s session.
